Position Summary: The Kenton County Public Library (KCPL) proudly serves our community by fostering lifelong readers and learners and inspiring imagination through a wide range of resources and services. We connect individuals to the digital world, offer insights into our community’s history, and provide safe, welcoming spaces—both physical and virtual—for people to gather or work independently.

KCPL offers more than 300 free programs each month, provides over 20 different services including free meeting spaces, notary, homebound delivery, passport services and more. The library specializes in early childhood literacy, workforce development, preserving local history, and community engagement efforts.

Recognized as one of the best and busiest libraries in Kentucky, KCPL has received both state and national recognition. Our Workforce Development program is a model for similar initiatives across the country.

With three physical branches, a virtual branch, an outreach branch, and an administrative center, KCPL operates with a dedicated team of over 160 employees. In spring 2025, we will open a new branch in Latonia, which will add 10-11 additional staff members, bringing full library services to this vibrant community.

The Human Resources Generalist will be responsible for assisting the HR Director in all functions of the department. This position provides strategic and hands-on support for HR functions including, but is not limited to, recruiting, benefits, handling employee leaves, training and serving as a liaison between the library and community partners.

 

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Administration of HR functions including recruitment and hiring; compensation and benefits; employee relations and coaching; training; employment law compliance; and performance management.
  • Primary contact for employee insurance program.
  • Responsible for organization’s FMLA administration.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of HR policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Maintain and update job descriptions, performance standards and essential functions.
  • May oversee the scheduling, assignments, and daily workflow of staff in the department in the absence of the HR Director.
  • Develop and maintain positive, effective relationships with staff, applicants, vendors, and community representatives.
  • Coordinates library’s annual staff development training day, as well as other employee recognition programs.
  • Manages employment-related inquiries from applicants, employees, and supervisors, referring complex and/or sensitive matters to the appropriate staff.
  • Attends and participates in employee disciplinary meetings, terminations, and investigations.
  • Maintains compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices.
  • Assists Administrative Assistant with background checks, employee eligibility verifications, and employment verifications.
  • Attends and contributes professionally to the Library’s Administrative Leadership Team.
  • Oversees special projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration or a related field required; Three to five years’ experience in human resources management strongly preferred.
  • HR Certification strongly preferred (PHR, SHRM-CP or SPHR) or a combination of education, experience, and certification.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain the necessary certification.
  • Thorough knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations.
  • Two to three years’ experience in benefits administration strongly preferred.
  • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional empathy, interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent time management skills with ability to meet deadlines.
  • Proven leadership and coaching skills
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.
  • Interpersonal skills to effectively deal with the public and coworkers in a positive, professional manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software. Advanced computer skills, including data entry, data processing, communication tools and payroll and human resources software.
  • Ability to quickly learn the organization’s automated systems.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, bend, stoop, reach and use step stool to move items to and from shelves.
  • Must be able to lift and move boxes weighing up to 20 lbs.
  • Must be able to see ½ inch numbers and ¼ inch letters at up to three feet.

 

Salary: $24.20/hour, dependent on qualifications; Excellent Benefits Package
