Job Opening – Senior Human Resources Generalist with Berns Garden Center & Landscaping in Middletown, OH

As the Senior Human Resources Generalist at Berns Garden Center & Landscaping, you will be a key leader, responsible for driving a healthy culture, managing all human resources functions, and aids in coordinating the administrative team at Berns Garden Center. This position reports directly to the Owner and works closely with the Controller to ensure that people, processes, and performance remain aligned across the organization. This role balances day-to-day HR duties with people-focused leadership and team accountability, delegating administrative tasks where appropriate and fostering a positive, organized work environment.
To be successful in the role, you will need to have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. You will also need to be highly organized with strong problem-solving skills.
Other requirements include:
- Lead recruiting, hiring, and onboarding of new team members across departments.
- Administer employee benefits, leave tracking, payroll, and HRIS management.
- Maintain accurate employee files and records; ensure compliance with employment laws and company policies are maintained.
- Address employee relations issues and provide guidance to leadership.
- Support and coach managers in performance conversations and documentation.
- Conduct exit interviews and manage offboarding procedures.
- Coordinate performance review cycles and manage timelines.
- Oversee the administration of the company’s 401(k) plan, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and providing employee support.
- Oversee the administration of the company’s H2A and H2B Visa Worker Programs, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and working closely with 3rd party partners; preferred.
- Manage workers’ compensation claims, reporting, and compliance, while promoting workplace safety initiatives.
- Ensure accurate and timely filing of Affordable Care Act (ACA) documentation in alignment with federal guidelines.
- Design, implement, and oversee employee training programs to foster professional growth and development.
- Participates as a member of the leadership team, contributing to company-wide strategy and decision-making.
- Hold team members accountable to timelines and performance standards.
- Promote cross-training, process documentation, and efficiency across roles.
- Champion the company’s core values and support a positive employee experience.
- Facilitate company communication, employee updates, and recognition programs.
- Collaborate with the Owner and Leadership Team on long-term workforce planning.
- Monitor team structure and recommend changes as needed to support growth.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business, or related field, with 5+ years of HR experience including supervisory or management roles; required.
- Knowledge of HR compliance, benefits administration, and recruiting best practices.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
- Experience coaching employees and leading cross-functional teams.
- Proficient with HRIS platforms and Microsoft Office; Paycom; preferred.
- SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP certification; preferred.
